Worship

Worship at Haymarket Baptist Church, Haymarket, VirginiaThe purpose of worship is quite simple: it is to glorify God.  This is carried out at both the corporate and individual levels, both through spontaneous acts of worship and through planned times of worship.  The weekly 10:55 a.m. Sunday morning worship service, a planned and corporate expression of worship, is the centerpiece of our life together as a church.  On certain of these Sundays, our worship is directed by special observances.  Beyond the weekly services, special times of worship are also offered.

EASTERTIDE:

THE GREAT FIFTY DAYS

Words for the Meantime:

Sermons from John 14-16

The days following the resurrection of our Lord constitute a season of celebration and reflection for the church.  They are often referred to as the Season of Easter.  This season is based on the fifty-day period of time between Resurrection Sunday and Pentecost Sunday; hence, the designation here of “The Great Fifty Days.”  From an historical perspective, it was during this period of time that Jesus appeared to his disciples, preparing them for the birth of the church and the continuation of his gospel ministry by the power of the Holy Spirit.  In this same spirit, we will turn to John 14-16 for sermon texts during this season.  This section of scripture, often referred to as Jesus’ “Farewell Discourse,” contains words our Lord shared with disciples on the eve of his crucifixion.  They were words intended to prepare them for life on the other side of the cross – life on this side of his coming again.  They are words most appropriate for our study at this time of the year.

Come and join us in worship as we continue to rejoice in this marvelously great thing God has done, and as we consider how we are to live as Christ’s disciples while awaiting his return.
