Mid-Week Gathering & Bible Study

Life in Northern Virginia is hectic.  In order to offer refuge from the busyness of our lives, Haymarket offers a variety of mid-week activities designed to put us in contact with each other and God.

First Wednesday Dinners – 5:45 – 6:30, first Wednesday of each month
On the first Wednesday of each month, our congregation gathers to share a meal around the tables.  Sponsored by a different Sunday school class each month, this takes one more thing of our to-do list for the evening and gives us a chance to catch up with one another.

Mid-Week Prayer Meeting and Adult Bible Study 6:30 – 7:30
Adults gather in the sanctuary each Wednesday at 6:45 to share prayer requests and a time of intersession.  Following prayer, Bible study is held, generally on a book of the Bible.

Children’s Activities 6:15 – 7:30
Mission Friends and Children in Action – The “doing” of following Christ is taught beginning at a young age at HBC.  Mission Friends and Children in Action is hands-on mission curriculum that incorporates the whole child.  Children learn of mission work around the world, and particularly how children are involved.  Children are then challenged in age-appropriate ways where they can be a witness for Christ in their home, school, and community.  A children’s choir is included in this time.

Mission Friends:  ages 3 – Kindergarten, Children in Action: grades 1st – 5th

Youth Ignite 6:30 – 8:00 -  grades 6-12
If youth claim from time to time that Sunday morning worship is not for them, then Ignite is!  This should not be substituted for Sunday worship but is in some ways modeled after the liturgy of our Sunday service.  At Ignite, the youth have the lead.  The first 30 minutes of the evening is dedicated to creative arts – a time where youth are lead by ‘experts’ to use art as an expression of worship.  We offer art such as creative writing, painting, sculpting, worship leadership, drama, and interpretive movement.

Our music is upbeat and categorized as “praise.”  Lyrics are presented via projector and power point.  Youth are asked to pray and read scripture.  A short talk is presented to the whole group usually in conjunction with media clips.  A large portion of our time is spent in small groups divided along age groups.  Here, the youth are given the chance to dialogue with one another – to listen and to be heard.

Ignite always begins with a time of fellowship.  Youth are encouraged to arrive early so they can spend time “hanging out” with one another.
